[Journal Club ]Neutron: A versatile tool for nuclear reaction studies

Prof. Ajay Kumar

Neutron-induced reactions are an integral part of the design the future Gen IV reactor systems and the Advanced Fuel Cycle. Cross sections are required to evaluate the performance characteristics of the reactor itself; such as energy generation, stability, performance, and the mechanics of materials, as well as address long-term waste disposal issues. MeV-neutron cross sections on light and medium mass nuclei change rapidly with neutron energy and this presents problems during design calculations. Precise neutron scattering measurements are needed at small bins of incident neutron energies with proper uncertainty estimation. Time of flight measurements as well Tagged neutron spectroscopy provides an excellent opportunity for such kind of measurements.
